Brookings Health System officially opened the newly constructed Medical Plaza building today, completing the first leg of the health system’s hospital expansion and renovation project. To accommodate patient access to the Medical Plaza, the new west entrance off the Twenty-Second Avenue and Third Street stoplight also opened today.

According to Brookings Health System CEO Jason Merkley, “The Medical Plaza will be an instrumental tool for retaining and recruiting physicians to our community.”

The Medical Plaza’s first floor tenant, Avera Medical Group Specialty Care clinic, includes familiar Brookings faces. Avera Medical Group moved its obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery and podiatry services last week from their 400 Twenty-Second Avenue clinic to the new building. Providers began seeing patients in their new clinic space this morning.

The Medical Plaza’s second floor is currently available for lease. Intentionally built as an open shell, the second floor may be setup for tenants’ unique needs.

“The goal is to continue to grow Brookings Health System and its medical staff to meet the needs of this region,” said Merkley. “The second floor of the Medical Plaza will accommodate those provider office space needs well into the future. The building even contains infrastructure to add on a third floor if the demand for space exceeds the second floor capacity.”

With the Medical Plaza open for business, construction continues on the rest of Brookings Health System’s campus.

“We thank our patients, visitors and community for their patience thus far during our project,” said Merkley. “With the Medical Plaza opening, parking on our campus will become somewhat congested until the new hospital expansion opens this winter. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience and are grateful that our community continues to be excited about, and supportive of, our progress.”

Once the east hospital expansion is completed, remodeling will start inside the original 1964 building. The entire project is slated for completion Summer 2017.
