Childbirth Support Specialists Doula Training

CLASS DATES: Mar. 7 & 8 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day

The workshop is recommended for those wishing to become a doula, current doulas, nurses, nursing students, lactation counselors, childbirth educators and other health care professionals. No prerequisites are required. It will be led by Victoria Wakeman of Childbirth Support Specialists. 

The Childbirth Professional International (CPI) Doula Birth and Postpartum certification program is internationally recognized and prepares doulas for an amazing and rewarding career. The comprehensive curriculum prepares doulas to support women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Participants will also learn strategies to build a successful doula business. CPI is celebrated and credited for upgrading their distinguished professional doula certification process to be streamlined for doulas while education them with the best and latest evidence-based education.

After attending this workshop, students will be able to:     

  • Identify attributes of doula care that improve birth outcomes
  • Implement techniques that assist with coping during labor
  • Recognize transformative phases of childbirth
  • Assist mothers with initial breastfeeding
  • Assess state of families during postpartum and provide care
  • Write a doula business plan

Students will also have a streamlined process to become both a certified professional birth doula and postpartum doula with no additional fees. They will also have information about how to become a Medicaid approved doula provider in South Dakota.

This workshop meets one requirement in becoming a doula at Brookings Health System.

About the Instructor

Victoria Wakeman of Childbirth Support Specialists is a dual certified birth and postpartum doula with nearly 25 years of experience as well as a childbirth educator, peer lactation consultant, certified doula trainer and the Doula Program Coordinator at Brookings Health System. Wakeman is also member of the SD Department of Health's Maternal and Infant Task Force and co-authored the bill that became the current doula Medicaid provider program for South Dakota. She continues to support and mentor doula students as they become certified and work in the field.

Registration Fees

The course is all-inclusive with a book, materials and certification included in the fee.

  • Early Bird: $795
  • After Jan. 31: $875

Payment plans are available. Registration fees automatically include certification, membership, and paperless documentation. Additional, separate training to become a certified breastfeeding specialist can be added but is not required.
