Artificial Intelligence Enhances New CT Imaging System

Brookings Health System recently installed a new 64-slice computerized tomography (CT) system that uses artificial intelligence to create images on par with 128-slice system.

“With one of the first 128-slice quality CT systems in the region, we can create highly detailed images for advanced applications while exposing a patient to an even lower dose of radiation,” said Director of Imaging and Respiratory Services Nicole Winseman.

The GE Revolution Ascend CT machine uses low-dose radiation and artificial intelligence to create high-resolution, digital images with enhanced contrast, texture and detail. The system uses an AI camera to auto center the patient. It also removes glare created by metal inside the body, such as with artificial joints, for more precise imaging. The high-quality imaging applications allow physicians to view a patient’s anatomy with less artifacts cutting across the picture.

“Our new CT system also allows technologists to setup next to the patient. It streamlines and automates workflow for our team members, meaning we can acquire and process imaging data more effeciently. We can get imaging results more quickly on the PACS system for medical providers to interpret. For emergency situations, like trauma or stroke, our increased speed helps patients have better outcomes,” said Winseman.

In addition, the new CT scanner improves patient access and comfort. Its wider bore opening provides 22% more room than the previous model used by the health system. The longer table allows for scanning taller patients without repositioning them and holds up to 675 pounds to accommodate bariatric patients. With the aid of a ceiling mounted camera, the table also automatically adjusts to the correct position for a patient. The system can remember a patient’s table setting for the next time a scan is needed.

Brookings Health’s outpatient CT hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Many days the CT team can setup same-day appointments for patients after receiving a referral, provided the patient’s insurance is pre-authorized. CT tests Brookings Health performs includes:

  • Routine venous scans, including obstructions, renal stones and infections
  • Arterial scans, including aneurysms and blood clots
  • Smaller reconstructed images for more finer detailed images
  • 3D reconstruction

Required Referral Information

A referral is required for radiology services. When making a referral to Brookings Health for CT, please:

  • Include the patient’s name, date of birth, phone number and weight
  • Include the diagnosis, type of scan, and if it is with or without contrast
  • Include insurance authorization
  • Include provider signature
  • Complete the CT Screening Form

Fax the order to Central Scheduling at (605) 696-8889 or send a scanned, signed order to BHSCentralScheduling@brookingshealth.org. Questions about referring may be directed to Central Scheduling at (605) 696-8888.
