Dr. Patrick Moriarty of Avera Medical Group Specialty Care was recently certified to perform surgical procedures on the Mako Robot at Brookings Health System. He is the second orthopedic surgeon at Brookings Hospital, along with Dr. Mark Mayer, who is able to perform robotic-arm assisted total knee, partial knee and total hip replacements.

The robotic certification requires attending and passing an extensive in-person, hands-on training course. This course included using cadavers, observing live Mako surgery as well as performing multiple cases using the technology.

“Robotic-assisted surgery allows me to perform knee and hip replacements with greater confidence in the level of precision by adding use of more detailed imaging prior to and during these procedures. I’m excited to participate in practicing this proven and tested technology advancement within our community.”
