East Central Behavioral Health Establishes Child Behavior Assessments at Brookings Health’s Outreach Clinic

  • April 05, 2016

East Central Behavioral Health has established a child behavior assessment for children ages 2 to 17 the first Thursday of each month at Brookings Health System’s outreach specialty clinic. The next clinic day is May 5.

The behavioral assessment provides parents, guardians and educators with an inclusive appraisal of a child’s behavior. Results may exclude or include possible diagnoses, especially for suspected Autism Spectrum and like disorders. A comprehensive report from the assessment explains likely behavior causes and recommends next steps.

To obtain an accurate diagnosis and build a complete picture of a child’s disorder, a transdisciplinary team of medical and behavioral professionals must each assess the child. The family-focused team includes a pediatric medical provider, a licensed psychologist, an occupational therapist, a speech-language pathologist, a licensed counselor and a licensed social worker. A child is seen by the team through the course of one day, spending approximately 45 to 60 minutes with each professional.

Children who are candidates for transdisciplinary child behavior assessment includes those who show developmental delays, aggressive behaviors, difficulty with social situations or unresolved problems in school. Most insurance is accepted for assessments and usually there are no out-of-pocket costs for parents.
