As certified sterile processing and distribution technicians, they ensure instrumentation and equipment used for medical and surgical procedures are properly disinfected and sterilized.

Sterile Processing Department Supervisor Jody Feucht and Sterile Processing Technician Jessyn Christensen were both recently credentialed as Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technicians (CSPDT) by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution.

Both Feucht and Christensen hold an associate degree in surgical technology from Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls, a prerequisite to certification. To become certified, Feucht and Christensen were required to complete a comprehensive examination on sterile processing, including decontamination and disinfection; preparation and handling; sterilization and sterile storage.

As sterile processing technicians, Feucht and Christensen ensure instrumentation and equipment used in medical and surgical procedures are properly cleaned, disinfected, inspected and sterilized prior to patient use. They are a critical component in delivering quality patient care, preventing infections, and ensuring each device functions well and is managed in a safe, consistent manner.

Brookings Health System’s sterile processing department is responsible for cleaning and sterilizing instrumentation used throughout the hospital as well as Yorkshire Eye Clinic & Optical, White Medical Clinic, Volga Medical Clinic, Arlington Medical Center, the Avera clinics in Brookings, and The Neighborhoods at Brookview skilled nursing home. The department also offers essential support for surgical services in the operating room.
