OBGYN Dr. Richard Gudvangen recently became certified to perform robotic-assisted surgery at Brookings Health System.

Gudvangen is trained to perform a range of gynecological procedures using the da Vinci robotic surgical system, including hysterectomy and incontinence procedures, and applies his years of OBGYN experience and knowledge to the new technology.

A physician at Avera Medical Clinic, a Department of Brookings Health System, Gudvangen is a member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. He performed his residency at the University of New York Health Science Center, Syracuse, and he also holds a master’s in microbiology from Trinity University, San Antonio.

Robotic-assisted surgery provides additional clinical benefits and efficiency in the operating room, resulting in improved patient outcomes. Patient benefits of robotic surgery include decreased pain and minimal scarring. They also have less risk of infection, blood loss, and shorter hospital stays.

Last March, Brookings Health System became the third health care provider in the state to actively offer advanced robotic surgical technology.
