Brookings Health System Physical Therapist Stan Halseide and Rehab Services Director Gavin Weber were named board-certified orthopedic clinical specialists by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

Orthopedic certified specialists are recognized as having advanced knowledge, experience, and skills in the practice of orthopedic physical therapy and the conditions affecting bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. In some cases, the therapeutic techniques they implement can prevent or delay surgery for patients. Their knowledge areas and procedures focus specifically on the needs of patients with orthopedic disorders, including orthopedic medical and surgical interventions.

To earn board certification, Halseide and Weber both logged over 2,000 clinical hours related to orthopedic conditions, received further education on orthopedic physical therapy practice, and passed a certification exam.

Halseide and Weber currently are the only physical therapists in Brookings to become orthopedic certified specialists. In addition to doctorate degrees in physical therapy, both are certified athletic trainers.
