Brian Sterud, Information Management Director at Brookings Health System, has achieved professional certification from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME).

A Certified Healthcare CIO (CHCIO) represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development for healthcare IT executives, with only 109 in the country reaching this level. Launched by CHIME in July 2009, the certification program is the only credentialing program that distinguishes healthcare IT executives from others in the industry.

To become certified, Sterud, had to pass a rigorous 125-question examination and possess specific professional qualifications, including 25 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and at least three years of experience as an IT executive.

"We congratulate Sterud for his commitment to the healthcare IT profession," said Tim Stettheimer, PhD, chair of CHIME's certification committee and CHIME Board of Trustees as well as senior vice president and regional CIO at St. Vincent's Health System.

"As a CHCIO, Sterud has identified himself as leading professional, giving him an immediate and continuous advantage in the industry. We believe CHCIO status is now the standard that organizations must use when determining who leads healthcare IT projects and initiatives."

The CHCIO Program was developed for IT executives by IT executives, with input from CHIME member volunteers and certification professionals at Castle Worldwide. By definition, a CHCIO demonstrates the commitment, knowledge, and experience required to master the core skills important for successful CIOs and IT executives.

In addition to the exam and professional experience, CHCIOs must be committed to ongoing professional development and undergo recertification every three years.

Sterud has worked at Brookings Health System since 2008 and has over 10 years of IT experience.
