OR Central Sterile Reprocessing Supervisor Roxanne Johnson, RN, was recently re-credentialed as Certified Sterile Processing Management by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution.

As the central sterile reprocessing supervisor in the operating room, Johnson is responsible for providing leadership, education and management to the workflow activities of the sterile processing area. The sterile processing department ensures instrumentation and equipment used in medical and surgical procedures is properly cleaned, disinfected, inspected and sterilized prior to patient use. They are a critical component in delivering quality patient care, preventing infections, and ensuring each device functions well and is managed in a safe, consistent manner.

At Brookings Health System, the sterile processing department is responsible for cleaning and sterilizing instrumentation used throughout the hospital as well as Yorkshire Eye Clinic, White Medical Clinic, Volga Medial Clinic, Arlington Medical Center, the Avera clinics in Brookings, and The Neighborhoods at Brookview skilled nursing home.

To become re-certified, Johnson was required to have a minimum of 24 months of full-time experience as a hands-on sterile processing supervisor and accumulate 150 continuing education credits over a 5-year period.

Johnson holds a nursing degree from Presentation College in Aberdeen and has nearly 20 years of nursing experience in the operating room.
