Amy Paulson, speech-language pathologist at Brookings Health System, will present “Know the 10 Signs,” an informational presentation on Alzheimer’s disease, on Thursday, May 16 at Brookings Health System in Conference Rooms A & B.

The presentation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. and repeated from 6 to 7 p.m. It is free to the public and everyone is invited to attend.

Paulson will discuss the warning signs of Alzheimer’s, the importance of early detection, and the resources available to help individuals and family members who face Alzheimer’s.

“Currently, over 5 million Americans live with Alzheimer's disease, including approximately 200,000 under the age of 65,” said Paulson. “This number is projected to increase to 16 million people living with Alzheimer's disease by 2050. As of 2010, 19,000 people over age 65 in South Dakota had Alzheimer's disease. Another American develops this disease every 68 seconds. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the only cause of death among the top 10 in America without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. This disease cannot wait.”

The presentation is being held in recognition of Better Hearing and Speech Month, a national celebration that recognizes the significant contributions of speech-language pathologists and speech therapy to the medical field.

Speech-Language Pathology services are one of the comprehensive therapy services offered at Brookings Health System. Speech and language disorders can take many forms and can limit academic achievement, social adjustment, and career advancement. An individual may be born with a speech or language disorder, or it may be caused by accidental injury or illness, like Alzheimer’s disease.
