Nurse Anesthetist Brian Kvamme, CRNA, will now offer interventional pain management services. Starting Nov. 1, Kvamme will see patients weekly at Brookings Health System’s Outreach Clinic.

According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, chronic pain affects over 100 million Americans, more than the number of people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer combined. Pain is a complex condition that reduces quality of life. It is also one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care. Using non-opioid methods to reduce pain helps patients regain function and improve their overall quality of life without risking addiction.

Pain conditions Kvamme will see patients for include neck and back pain, non-surgical joint pain and muscle pain, among others. Some of the opioid-sparing procedures he will offer include trigger point injections to treat painful muscles; joint injections for relief from pain caused by arthritis, injury, or stress; epidural injections to relieve nerve impingement at the spine; and sacroiliac injections to reduce inflammation where the lower spine and pelvis connect.

Kvamme recently completed a fellowship in advanced pain management from the University of South Florida College of Nursing in Tampa, Fla., and has become board certified in non-surgical pain management. He received his master’s in nurse anesthesia from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and is also a graduate of SDSU’s College of Nursing.

A referral is required for interventional pain management. For more information, please visit brookingshealth.org/Pain.
