Last week Brookings Health System expanded the nationally recognized Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 childhood obesity program to the Brookings Boys and Girls Club.

Registered Dietitian Katy VanderWal began teaching grade school club members enrolled in the program this fall about good nutrition and exercise based on the principles of “5-2-1-0”:

5 – fruit and vegetable servings every day

2 – hours or less of recreation screen time every day

1 – hour or more of physical activity every day

0 – sugary drinks, more water and low-fat milk

Every two weeks until December, VanderWal will provide education tools to children to address childhood obesity and guide youth and their families to healthier eating and increased physical activity.

Earlier this spring, Brookings Health System rolled out the Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 program to the communities of Arlington and White. The success of those pilot programs prompted Brookings Health System to expand classes to the Boys and Girls Club.
