Brookings Health System’s new skilled nursing facility, The Neighborhoods at Brookview, will host a public open house on Friday, May 31, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the facility’s location, 2421 Yorkshire Drive in Brookings.

Tours of the new nursing home facility will be given during the open house. In addition, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m.

“We are excited to show the public our new home,” said Brookview Administrator Jason Hanssen. “In addition to seeing the new space, visitors will get to learn about our model of long-term care which aims to create a homelike, social setting for residents. We’ve shaped the physical environment, organizational structure and interpersonal relationships between staff and residents to create a genuine, home atmosphere.”

Currently the facility is undergoing finishing touches to ready it for use. Residents and staff are scheduled to move in to The Neighborhoods the week of June 2.

The construction project is phase two of Brookings Health System’s overall Master Campus Plan. The 67,000 square feet structure triples the existing space at the previous facility, Brookview Manor. It will feature 73 private rooms and three semi-private rooms for couples.

The Neighborhoods at Brookview is a pod-style facility with three distinct neighborhoods. Each neighborhood consists of two households, and each household accommodates 13 residents with a total of 26 residents per neighborhood. The neighborhoods and households include kitchen and living spaces as well as private family dining rooms, spa areas and other amenities.

Centrally located between and connecting the three neighborhoods is Town Center. Town Center is the heart of social activity within The Neighborhoods at Brookview and acts as the community’s Main Avenue. Here residents gather for social interaction with each other and loved ones, including religious services, coffee, and purchasing sundries. Town Center areas include:

  • Country Store
  • Café
  • Library with Internet Café
  • Chapel
  • Beauty/Barber Shop with Manicure Station
  • Large Gathering Hall
  • Lobby and Lounge Area
  • Administration Offices

The Neighborhoods at Brookview initiates a culture change, creating a home-like, neighborhood environment focused on residents. It is adopting the universal worker concept, diversifying staff’s capabilities and consistently assigning them with a small group of residents. With more space and respect for residents’ rights, Brookings Health System’s goal is healthier residents and individually tailored care.
