Bonnie Nelson, RN at Brookings Health System, recently completed her training to become a certified foot care nurse (CFCN) from the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board. She performs foot care for patients at Brookings Health System’s foot care clinics.

As a certified foot care nurse, Nelson is able to help patients find the right care and treatment regimen for their foot care needs. In addition, she is able to recommend patients with foot care problems to other appropriate care providers as needed, such as a podiatrist or surgeon.

Nelson is trained to perform routine foot assessments involving foot inspection and nail trimming. During the inspection of a patient’s foot, she looks for color changes, foot or ankle swelling, temperature changes, decreased sensation, skin cracks, bone formations, calluses, ulcers and ingrown toenails.

Nelson, a resident of Lake Preston, S.D., has nine years of experience helping patients care for their feet. She also worked for a year and a half at a podiatrist clinic. She holds an associate degree in nursing from the University of South Dakota.

Brookings Health System holds foot care clinics every Tuesday at the hospital and monthly at White Medical Clinic and Arlington Medical Center. Referral is not required. Call (605) 696-8888 to schedule a foot care appointment at any of the upcoming foot care clinics.
