A new Alzheimer’s support group will begin meeting monthly at Brookings Health System’s hospital conference rooms A and B starting on June 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. Subsequent monthly meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month at the same time and place.

The support group is open to people with Alzheimer’s and their friends, family and caregivers. It will create a safe, confidential and supportive environment for participants to develop informal, mutual support and social relationships.

The group will educate and inform participants about dementia and help develop methods and skills to solve problems and create coping mechanisms. The group will also encourage and support caregivers to maintain their own physical and emotional health while enabling them to optimally care for a person with dementia.

Amy Paulson, speech-language pathologist at Brookings Health System, will facilitate the group. Paulson serves as the Walk to End Alzheimer’s chairperson for the South Dakota Alzheimer’s Association and also facilitates a support group in Huron.

For more information on the Alzheimer’s support group, please contact Amy Paulson at (605) 696-8821 or apaulson@brookingshealth.org.
