New Volunteer Program Launches at Brookings Health System

  • April 19, 2012

Brookings Health System officially announced today the launch of the organization’s new volunteer program.

“The new program builds on established volunteer areas that we have had for years, such as hospice, and opens it up to other segments of our facilities, including birth doulas in obstetrics and activity and staff assistance at Brookview Manor nursing home,” said Human Resources Manager September Bessler.

The new program was established in response to community interest about giving back to Brookings Health System.

“Volunteers play an important role in our organization,” said CEO and President Jason Merkley. “At times they are the ones directly providing comfort and companionship to our patients and residents. Because they transform lives and create a direct impact on care, Brookings Health System is grateful for their contributions to our organization.”

The announcement coincides with National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, which celebrates and recognizes people who engage and give back to their communities.

To become a volunteer at Brookings Health System, candidates apply for the opportunity areas they are interested in. Brookings Health System then matches the candidate to the area that best suits their skills and qualifications. In addition to interviewing, submitting medical immunization records, and passing background checks, candidates may have to train for the opportunity they are applying for.

If selected as a volunteer, individuals receive a complimentary polo shirt and discounted meals at Brookings Health System’s cafeteria.

Any individual interested in volunteering may submit the volunteer application at www.brookingshealth.org/Volunteer. Questions about volunteering may be directed to Volunteer Coordinator Amy Christensen at achristensen@brookingshealth.org.
