Mayla Irene Petersen arrived at 8:11 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2017, making her the first baby of the New Year born at Brookings Health System.

Mayla is the daughter of Stephanie and Jason Petersen of Brookings and joins older brother, Grayden, at home. She weighed six pounds and 10 ounces and measured 20 inches long. Mother and baby are both doing well.

The New Year’s Baby and her parents received a variety of toys, baby products, and, gift certificates of cash and services from local businesses and organizations. Contributors to the New Year’s Baby gift basket include:
