Emergency Department Nurse Chelsey Sundberg, RN, received the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) Young Professional Distinguished Service Award last week at SDAHO’s 91st annual convention.

Sundberg was selected for the honor based on her demonstrated leadership in both her military and civilian careers.

Sundberg has served in the South Dakota National Guard for over 16 years. She was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait in 2003-2004 with the 740th Transportation Company. In 2015, Sundberg was commissioned to first lieutenant and currently serves in the Medical Command as a medical-surgical nurse. In this role, she is responsible for managing and training a team of health care noncommissioned officers and for performing nursing procedures during period health assessments.

Her skills learned in the military carry over to her civilian duties as an emergency nurse. Sundberg received her nursing degree from South Dakota State University and started working at Brookings Health System in June 2014. In her three years with Brookings Health, she has sought and embraced several leadership roles, serving as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and Trauma Coordinator. Last year, Sundberg was promoted to Nursing Supervisor.

SDAHO’s Young Professional award honors individuals under 40 who demonstrate leadership and a passion for making a difference in health care in their community.
