August “Gus” Graham McCuen, the son of Meredith and LaMonte McCuen of Brookings, was born at 1:55 a.m. on Jan. 1, making him the first baby of the New Year at Brookings Health System. He weighed 7 lbs., 12 oz. and measured 20.75 inches long.

Ambulance Service Recognized with Career EMS Service Award
Brookings Health System’s Ambulance service received the Career EMS Service Award at the 2024 South Dakota Emergency Medical Services Association (SDEMSA) conference in Spearfish, S.D., this fall. The honor celebrates Brookings Health’s Ambulance team for going above and beyond in their commitment to saving lives and improving healthcare.
Brookings Health Recognized with Performance Leadership Award
As part National Rural Health Day, Brookings Health System announced it has been recognized with a Performance Leadership Award in two measured categories: quality and outcomes. Compiled by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, the Performance Leadership Awards honor top quartile performance among all rural hospitals in the nation. It is Brookings Health’s eighth consecutive year receiving the recognition.
Third Annual Diabetes Fair Education Event Set for Dec. 5
Brookings Health System will hold the third annual diabetes fair on Dec. 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the health system’s Conference Room A. The free, educational event is geared toward people living with diabetes as well as healthcare providers.

Free Vaccination Center on Monday for Pertussis and Influenza
The Brookings County Pandemic Planning and Coordination Committee (PPCC) will hold a free, walk-in pertussis (whooping cough) and influenza community vaccination center, also referred to as a point of dispensing (POD), on Monday, Oct. 28. Vaccines will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The event will run from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Brookings High School, 530 Elm Avenue. Attendees are asked to use the main west entrance.

For the second consecutive year, Brookings Hospital has been recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The awards list was announced on Oct. 23 and can currently be viewed on Newsweek’s website.
