PDO thread lifts are a less invasive alternative to facelift surgery, with results typically lasting four to six months.

Näva Medical Spa, Brookings Health System’s aesthetic medicine clinic, now offers polydioxanone (PDO) thread lifts to help tighten loose skin on the jaw, cheek and neck area without surgery. Sometimes referred to as a mini facelift, the procedure uses dissolvable sutures to tighten and lift sagging skin.

“Polydioxanone has been used for over 30 years in cardiothoracic surgery,” said Tonya Buchholz, CNP, clinician at Näva Medical Spa. “The material is fully absorbed by the body in four to six months. It doesn’t leave scars but does stimulate collagen growth. Collagen loss causes our skin to age. By reproducing collagen, our skin regains its structure and elasticity. The results from PDO thread injections include enhanced face contours, increased volume and improved skin texture.”

The FDA-approved process uses hypodermic needles preloaded with PDO thread. Several threads are injected into the skin, often in a mesh technique to recreate the face’s natural V-shape. The inserted threads create a scaffolding to support the tissues. The threads also delicately grasp onto the loose skin and soft tissue, repositioning them to the V-shape. Once injected in the skin, the threads’ presence triggers collagen production which builds upon the scaffold.

PDO thread lifts are less invasive than facelift surgery. They can be performed in under 45 minutes and do not use a scalpel or any incisions. Patients report minimal to no pain after thread insertion. PDO threads are also cheaper than facelifts and provide immediate results with full results noticed after one to two weeks. Results typically last four to six months.

Appointments for PDO thread lifts are available every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Näva Medical Spa. Individuals may make an appointment by calling or texting (605) 695-7394.

Näva Medical Spa, located in Brookings Health System’s Outreach Clinic, offers private, confidential services tailored to individuals’ unique skin needs. State-of-the-art cosmetic techniques create natural results. Non-invasive procedures include laser hair removal and skin treatments to minimize the signs of aging. Medical-grade skin care products are offered as a part of a medically supervised skin care regimen selected for a patient’s skin type. The Isaac Scot Nursery recognizes the funds given to Brookings Health System Foundation by Team Isaac.

“We are grateful to the Hemmestad family and all that Team Isaac does within our community to make a positive impact for babies and their families,” said Foundation Director Sara Schneider. “Isaac touched so many lives and continues to do so through Team Isaac.”

The nursery at New Beginnings Birth Center was included in the 2018 Brookings Hospital expansion and renovation project. Now as the Isaac Scot Nursery, it will continue to provide resources for newborns who need special monitoring and care as well as provide a space for team members to perform other routine medical procedures.

Isaac was born at Brookings Hospital 15 years ago on June 28. He passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on Feb. 15, 2008, at seven and a half months old. The Hemmestads founded Team Isaac in memory of their baby.

Team Isaac’s mission is to provide awareness of SIDS and to help local babies reach their first steps. To date, over 3,500 Safe to Sleep gift packs funded by Team Isaac have been distributed to babies born at New Beginnings Birth Center. Each gift pack contains a HALO SleepSack swaddle and Charlie’s Kids Sleep Baby Safe and Snug board book. It also includes educational information to encourage parents to put their baby safely to sleep to prevent SIDS.

Individuals who would like to give to the Team Isaac Fund and help continue Isaac Scot’s legacy may do so at brookingshealth.org/Donate. It also allows mothers freedom of movement during labor. In addition, nitrous oxide does not disrupt the release of oxytocin, the hormone that promotes early mother-baby bonding and breast milk production.”

Commonly referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an inhaled anesthetic gas that mothers can self-administer during labor by holding a small mask to their mouth. Women who use nitrous oxide still have an awareness of contractions and labor pain, but the pain is dulled and made easier to cope with. The gas also helps women relax by reducing anxiety. Because women self-administer the gas, they also feel more in control of their pain management.

Nitrous oxide can be used continuously throughout labor, up until the time of delivery. Its use may be stopped at any point, with its effects leaving both the mother’s and baby’s bodies within five minutes. It may be used in conjunction with an epidural or in cases where it’s too early or too late for an epidural. Nitrous oxide can also be used in place of narcotic pain medication during labor.

Brookings Health System’s OB unit, New Beginnings Birth Center, has eight beds consisting of five labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites and three postpartum recovery rooms. The unit provides full OB services to expectant parents and enables area residents to deliver their baby close to home with a local physician. As a Baby-Friendly® Hospital, Brookings Health ensures mothers who deliver at New Beginnings Birth Center and intend to breastfeed, as well as those who cannot or decide not to breastfeed, are supported.
