Ophthalmology is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical care of eye conditions. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who manage complex eye diseases and perform eye surgery to protect and improve vision.

You may be referred to an ophthalmologist if you have a chronic or complex eye condition, vision loss, eye disease such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, or if you need surgical evaluation or treatment. Ophthalmologists often work alongside optometrists and other medical providers to provide specialized care.
