When should children start seeing an eye doctor?

The American Optometric Association recommends a baseline eye exam for children between six months and 12 months of age. This exam helps detect early ocular problems that might affect development of the eyes. Following that exam, a child should have at least one comprehensive exam between age three and five. This exam will help determine the needs for glasses prior to starting school. After that, the frequency of regular eye visits depends on the child. Children who need corrective lenses should be seen annually. Most children who do not need prescription glasses can be seen every two years.
