How does Botox work?

Botox Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It works by blocking the signal from the nerves to the muscles responsible for facial contractions.

By relaxing these muscles, the skin above them remains smooth, softening existing wrinkles and preventing new ones from forming.

Crow’s Feet

As we age, the skin around the eyes loses elasticity. Repeated squinting and smiling lead to "crow’s feet," or lateral canthal lines. Botox is injected into the orbicularis oculi muscle to relax these areas, resulting in a refreshed, more youthful appearance around the eyes.

Glabellar Lines (Frown Lines)

The "11" lines that appear between your eyebrows are known as glabellar lines. These are caused by the repeated furrowing of the brow. By targeting the corrugator and procerus muscles, Botox prevents the "tired" or "angry" look associated with deep frown lines.

Forehead Lines

Botox can also be used to treat the horizontal lines that form when you raise your eyebrows. Treating this area helps restore a smooth facial appearance and prevents deep creases from becoming permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions

While some patients notice changes sooner, Botox typically reaches its full effect within three to seven days after treatment. If you are scheduling for a major event like a wedding or reunion, we recommend booking your appointment at least two weeks in advance.

On average, Botox treatments last between four to six months. As the muscle action gradually returns, wrinkles will begin to reappear. However, with consistent treatments, lines often appear less severe over time because the muscles are being trained to relax.

The primary difference between Botox and dermal fillers lies in the type of wrinkle being treated. Botox blocks nerve signals to relax the muscles that cause frown lines and crow's feet. Dermal fillers are used to add volume to the face and fill in static creases.
