Tubal Ligation
Tubal ligation, often referred to as “having your tubes tied,” is a same-day surgical procedure to prevent pregnancy. It is a very common form of female sterilization in which a gynecological surgeon burns or clips a woman’s fallopian tubes. This prevents an egg from traveling from an ovary through the fallopian tube to the uterus for fertilization. The result is a permanent birth control method for women that does not affect their menstrual cycles.
Tubal ligation can be performed at any time, including after childbirth or in combination with another abdominal surgery, such as a C-section. Candidates for tubal ligation are adult women who are done having children.
