Compassionate Orthopedics Care Offers Comfort and Confidence [Malynda Mabbitt]

Video Transcript

Question: Can you tell us about your background and experience with orthopedic surgery?

Answer: My name is Melinda Mbit, and I've been in Brookings for 9 years, working as a learning designer at SDSU. I have experience with orthopedic surgery, having had my right knee replaced in my 20s. Recently, my left knee started hurting, prompting me to seek an orthopedic surgeon.

Question: What led you to seek medical attention for your left knee?

Answer: My left knee began locking up while I was walking on campus, and I wanted to ensure it wouldn't deteriorate like my right knee did. I heard good things about a straightforward orthopedic surgeon, which encouraged me to make an appointment.

Question: What was the initial diagnosis process like?

Answer: I expected an X-ray, but the doctor ordered an MRI to investigate further since my knee was locking up. The MRI results were clear, which was a relief, but the doctor suggested a scope to see what was happening inside the knee.

Question: Can you describe the surgical procedure and your experience?

Answer: The surgery involved small incisions for a camera and tools. The doctor found areas that needed smoothing out, which was causing the knee to lock. The care I received was exceptional; I felt treated as a person, not just a number.

Question: How was your recovery process?

Answer: Recovery was surprisingly easy. I walked out on my own and was able to move around without crutches. I felt great post-surgery, with no pain, and I was back to walking 3 to 5 miles a day shortly after.

Question: What impact has the surgery had on your daily life?

Answer: The surgery significantly improved my mobility and confidence. I can now engage in activities with my children without hesitation, and my knee feels much better than before.

Question: What advice would you give to others experiencing similar issues?

Answer: Don’t wait to seek help if you have knee issues. Early intervention can prevent more severe problems down the line. The care I received made a huge difference in my recovery and overall experience.
