The Neighborhoods at Brookview Overview

Video Transcript

It takes more than walls, wood and windows to make a house. Even a home, when you build it with heart, can be something more. At Brookings Health System, our inspiration goes even farther to build a community, a neighborhood that becomes a home. That's what you'll find at The Neighborhoods at Brookview. Opened in 2013, The Neighborhoods at Brookview bring together a holistic approach to care and community in a state-of-the-art skilled nursing facility. With 67,000 square feet, residents live in one of three unique neighborhoods that include two households of 13 people and rooms within these households reflect the changing needs of residents including private rooms, semi-private rooms for couples, bariatric rooms and hospice suites.

Private and semi-private rooms for couples include a bed, nightstand, chair, dresser and T.V. stand. Both room types also feature telephone, cable and internet hookups along with WiFi access. There is also oxygen piped in our resident rooms along with private handicap accessible bathrooms equipped with heat lamps and roll-in showers. In order to give the residents the most home-like setting, they can control the temperature of their room. Similar to our standard private rooms, bariatric rooms accommodate the needs of bariatric residents with additional space, extended doorways, wider handrails and specially designed bathroom utilities and furniture. For those residents facing terminal illness and requiring hospice care, our hospice suites focus on meeting the medical, emotional and spiritual care residents look for during this stage of life. The Neighborhoods at Brookview also include rooms for those needing short-term stays or rehabilitation services. These rooms in the Transitional Care Unit are furnished similar to a hotel. The Neighborhoods feature places to relax, enjoy a private dinner with family or dine with neighbors, also with outdoor spaces, kitchens and laundry facilities.

Our model of care, called a household model, also creates a resident-centered culture that encourages seniors to make their own choices. If it's when to eat a meal, how warm they want their room or even when to wake up or bathe. Our philosophy of care also includes consistent staffing in each household, developing a higher level of comfort with residents while giving consistency to their care. And like any community, you can find a center of activity in the town center. Here, there is a store, barber and beauty shop, park, library with internet access and a cafe, along with a chapel, large group room for movie nights and therapy facilities. This home-like setting creates an environment that supports the natural and familiar routines of a resident's home life.

But healthcare is never far away. With registered nurses always on duty and just a few doors down, access to the Brookings Health System’s emergency department and the entire team of healthcare experts at the hospital are there to serve you and your health needs. Because in this neighborhood, you find inspiring health in your home.
