Orthopedic Care For All Ages
My name is Michael Holmoe. I am an orthopedic surgeon here with Avera and Brookings Health System. My connection to the Brookings area is that I went to South Dakota State University, graduated from here with a degree in biology and then went on to medical school.
What is general orthopedics?
General orthopedics is the care of individuals who have pain, whether it's in a bone, joint, tendon, ligament, anywhere in their body.
What type of patients do you see?
As a general orthopedic surgeon, we see a wide variety of patients. We diagnose, treat, issue physical therapy for rehab and we also prescribe preventative medicine.
What are common orthopedic cases?
It depends on the age range. It's usually the kids who fall off the monkey bars and break their elbow or the weekend warrior who has injury to their knee or Achilles, and then some of the older population who will come in with arthritic pain. But it doesn't matter the patient, we're willing to see everyone here at Brookings Health System.
How are orthopedic cases diagnosed?
Orthopedic conditions are diagnosed, first and foremost, by having the patient come in. We see them, do a physical exam, get the history of what happened to them. Once we have a history of what happened and an idea of where their pain is coming from, we can and probably will order additional imaging, such as an x-ray, ultrasound, or MRI, possibly a CT. Once we have an idea of what is exactly going on, we can further their treatment from there.
What treatments and procedures do you offer?
We offer a wide variety of treatment. They start out with oral medications, topical medications, injectables, physical therapy, and preventative medicine and we also offer surgery as a last resort.
Would you recommend Brookings Health System?
I would highly recommend Brookings Health System for orthopedic care because they're embedded in the community. They've been here for ages and, as a team, we strive to give back to the community and to care for the people here.
