Malone Becomes Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse

Registered nurse Lisa Malone recently earned certification from the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board as a Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON).

To earn certification, Malone completed continuing education through webWOC at Metropolitan State University in the Twin Cities. She also performed 100 clinical hours in Sioux Falls, working with both outpatient and inpatient wound and ostomy cases. She also brings 25 years of nursing experience to her role, during which she has assisted with patient wound care and treatment.

As a CWON, Malone cares for patients and residents with wounds caused by medical treatments, diseases or injuries. She also provides post-surgery treatment and care for patients with ostomies, which are surgical openings that allow for the elimination of bodily waste.

Malone’s board certification ensures she possesses the knowledge and qualifications to provide specialized care to meet patients’ wound and ostomy needs. In her role, she helps the care team at Brookings Health System to asses and determine the cause of a wound, identify appropriate treatment options, and develop wound care plans. She also introduces techniques to prevent skin breakdown and help wounds, abscesses and feeding tube sites quickly heal. For ostomies, she evaluates and recommends pouching systems that provide containment and security and develops individual rehabilitation plans for patients.

She also educates patients and family members on self-care techniques, prevention and strategies to optimize healing. She can assist with problem solving and coordinating patient supplies for both wounds and ostomies.
