New Lab Testing Reduces Result Wait Times
- Summer 2022
Three new diagnostic testing platforms are helping Brookings Health System’s lab team to speed up turnaround time for laboratory results.
Chemistry Analyzer
In addition to performing all the basic chemistry labs, the new Vitros 7600 chemistry analyzer has expanded testing capabilities, including:
- Ammonia
- Hepatitis
- HIV
- Tumor markers CA 19-9 and CA 125
- Female fertility: LH, FSH, progesterone, prolactin
- Testosterone
- Immunoglobulin: IGA, IGM, IGG
- Rheumatoid factor (RF)
- Valproic acid
Syphilis Analyzer
The new ASI Evolution automated syphilis analyzer examines up to 190 blood samples at a time. Using a high-definition digital camera and algorithm, the analyzer can detect if incubated samples are positive or negative for syphilis bacteria. The analyzer only takes 30 minutes to produce results. Before the analyzer, laboratory technologists performed syphilis tests manually, a process that took several hours. With the current syphilis outbreak, results are processed much faster than sending the test to a reference lab that takes 24 to 48 hours for results.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
The new BD Max PCR system performs either urine or PCR swab testing to produce results in two hours for gonorrhea, chlamydia and group B streptococcus. Lab professionals used to perform these tests by culture or send them to Sioux Falls for analysis.
Ordering Outpatient Labs
Brookings Health System’s laboratory collaborates with health providers to deliver positive patient outcomes. The lab is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and can perform testing for any patient with an order. To refer a patient, please either write an order or submit an order electronically to the lab. Written orders can be sent with the patient or may be sent to Central Scheduling by fax to (605) 696-8889 or by email to BHSCentralScheduling@brookingshealth.org.
