Brookings Health System's New Medical Plaza

This fall the doors will open to Brookings Health System’s new Medical Plaza, an office building that gives hospital-based clinicians like surgeons and OB/GYNs easy hospital access to better care for patients. 

The first leg of Brookings Health System’s hospital expansion and renovation project is drawing to a close with completion of the two-story Medical Plaza. The health system has high hopes for the 30,000 square-foot building on northwest corner of Brookings Health System’s campus. 

“The Medical Plaza will be an instrumental tool for recruiting physicians to our community,” said CEO Jason Merkley. “We hope to attract new, full-time specialists to care for patients here in Brookings. The clinic space available for rent in the Medical Plaza and its close proximity to the hospital strengthens our ability to recruit doctors to locate here.”

The Medical Plaza already has tenants on its first floor with some familiar faces to Brookings (see sidebar). Avera Medical Group is moving its obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery and podiatry services from their 400 Twenty-Second Avenue clinic to the new building. Operating as Avera Medical Group Specialty Care Brookings, the specialists will provide the same great care to their patients in a new clinic setting. 

The Medical Plaza’s second floor is currently available for lease. Intentionally built as an open shell, the second floor is ready to be setup for tenants’ unique needs.

“The goal is to continue to grow Brookings Health System and its medical staff to meet the needs of this region. The second floor of the Medical Plaza will accommodate those provider office space needs well into the future,” says Merkley. “The Medical Plaza will contain infrastructure to add on a third floor if the demand for space exceeds the second floor capacity.”

While the Medical Plaza will open for business this fall, construction will still continue on the rest of Brookings Health System’s campus. The east hospital expansion is scheduled for completion this winter. Shortly after, remodeling will start inside the original 1964 building, including opening up the west entrance off Twenty-Second Avenue to accommodate access to the Medical Plaza. The entire project is slated for completion Summer 2017.
