Brookings Health System was again named a Top 20 Rural Community Hospital in the United States by the National Rural Health Association (NRHA). The health system scored in the top one percent among peer rural and community hospitals across the nation on the winter 2024 Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, the tool used to recognize the Top 20.
“Our team’s hard work and dedication to positive patient outcomes and excellent service continues to prove year-after-year that we have what it takes to be among the best rural and community hospitals in the nation,” said President and CEO Jason Merkley of the Top 20 honor. “Our focus is to continue to deliver the high-quality, compassionate, personalized health care our community has come to know and trust.”
This is the seventh time since the award was established in 2016 that the NRHA has named Brookings Health to the elite Top 20 list. The health system will be recognized at an awards ceremony during NRHA’s Rural Hospital Innovation Summit on May 9 in New Orleans, La. The NRHA honors the 20 highest-ranked prospective payment system hospitals in the country based on an evaluation by the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®.
For the ninth consecutive year Brookings Health System has been included by The Chartis Center for Rural Health on the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals list. The annual recognition program honors outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals and is also based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®.
“To consistently be recognized as a Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital since the honor was established in 2016 speaks to the high-quality, compassionate, personalized health care our team delivers day-in and day-out,” said President and CEO Jason Merkley. “As a rural and community hospital leader, our community can rest assured they will receive outstanding care when they walk through our doors.”
Based entirely on publicly available data, the INDEX is the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. Utilizing 50 independent indicators, the INDEX assesses performance across eight pillars of performance that span market-, value- and finance-based categories. Brookings Health System has also been recognized as a four-year champion to Newsweek’s list of World’s Best Hospitals. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The awards list can currently be viewed on Newsweek’s website.

Brookings Health ranks 189 of the Best Hospitals 2024 in the United States, up 40 spots from last year’s ranking. In addition, Brookings Health has received a Patient Experience Award, marking high patient satisfaction. Newsweek and Statista developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Four data sources were used for the evaluation:
- Hospital recommendations from Medical Experts: an international online survey sent to more than 85,000 doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals
- Patient Experience: surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals and the quality of care the patient received
- Hospital Quality Metrics: data on quality of care, hygiene measures and staffing
- Patient Reported Outcome Measures: surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals
