The Brookings Colorectal Cancer Awareness Program (BCCAP) is dedicated to educating and informing the public about colorectal cancer. Knowing the symptoms, risks and preventive measures for colorectal cancer can save lives.

Each year, a group of SDSU students from the School of Communication and Journalism organizes a colorectal cancer awareness campaign to keep the BCCAP legacy going. Funds raised during the campaign benefit Brookings Health System Foundation and are used to encourage area residents ages 45 and older to stay up-to-date on their colorectal cancer screening.

“Brookings Health System and our Foundation are grateful to BCCAP and their team’s continuing efforts to raise our community’s awareness of colorectal cancer,” said Brookings Health System Foundation Director Brittany Venekamp. “According to the South Dakota Cancer Registry, colorectal cancer has the second highest cancer mortality rate in Brookings County. The good news: early detection for colorectal cancer through routine preventative care like colonoscopies leads to a 90% five-year survival rate.”

In 2024, BCCAP is looking to partner with businesses and individuals who feel strongly about fighting colorectal cancer. Any and all donations are appreciated. BCCAP uses the donations to support continued education and awareness about BCCAP’s cause in the Brookings community.

Are you interested in donating or partnering with BCCAP? We would love to hear from you! Please contact Abby Theisen at abbygail.theisen@jacks.sdstate.edu for more information on the 2024 BCCAP campaign.
