General Surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Johnson became certified to perform robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci robotic surgical system at Brookings Health System.

Johnson is trained to perform a variety of general surgeries using the da Vinci robotic surgical system including gall bladder removal and hernia repair.

Certified by the American College of Surgeons, Johnson is a physician at Avera Medical Group, a department of Brookings Health System. He attended medical school at Saba University School of Medicine, Saba, Netherlands. Johnson completed his residency at the University of Missouri, at Kansas City School of Medicine.

In March of 2013, Brookings Health System became the third health care provider in the state to actively offer advanced robotic surgical technology. Johnson is the fourth da Vinci certified surgeon at Brookings Health System, joining colleagues General Surgeon Dr. Theresa Oey, OBGYN Dr. Ellen Hopper and OBGYN Dr. Richard Gudvangen.

Robotic-assisted surgery allows for additional clinical benefits and efficiency in the operating room resulting in improved patient outcomes. Benefits of robotic surgery for the patient include decreased pain, minimal scarring, less risk of infection and blood loss and shorter hospital stays.
