Patient getting an ultrasound

In February Brookings Health received a new, state-of-the-art GE Fortis ultrasound system. The new system produces clearer images with more detail in all areas of the body, but especially for maternal fetal medicine scans and abdominal organ scans.

For maternal fetal medicine, the new ultrasound system offers improved color doppler to show more precise blood flow in the fetal heart. This helps more accurately detect congenital heart defects. For obstetrics patients, that means higher quality diagnostic images can be captured locally in Brookings.

The advanced ultrasound system also offers better penetration to create clearer images of deeper structures. This added depth and clarity can aid in improving the resolution of internal organ conditions such as liver or kidney lesions. In some cases, it may help patients avoid further testing. The improved penetration also helps with obtaining more detailed images in bariatric patients.

Portable X-Ray

In March the health system replaced their existing portable X-ray machine with a new, state-of-the-art GE AMX Navigate portable X-ray system. The new system produces diagnostic images with four-times higher resolution while using less radiation dose. This gives providers high-quality images with sharper detail while enhancing patient safety.

A portable X-ray system allows a radiology technologist to scan a patient at the bedside rather than moving the patient to an exam room. This convenience reduces discomfort and enhances overall care for patients with injuries or limited mobility. In addition, diagnostic images instantly appear on the portable X-ray screen, allowing health care providers to quickly diagnose and treat patients.

The new X-ray system also uses artificial intelligence to check image quality as well as analyze and flag potentially critically conditions on screen. In emergency cases where a patient has a collapsed lung, the portable X-ray assesses endotracheal tube placement. The system immediately alerts the care team if the tube placement needs to be repositioned, adding to patient safety.

For technologists, both new systems speed up their workflow. The portable X-ray machine is ergonomically designed for easy movement and transport. Its on-deck barcode reader automatically matches the patient to the correct exam. The ultrasound system is also ergonomically designed and uses AI tools to increase technologist efficiency. For patients the increased technologist efficiency for these exams can lead to a more thorough diagnosis and a quicker scan time, which means less time spent on a procedure.
