Seven local children recently completed Brookings Health System’s summer Therapy Day Camp, held July 30 through Aug. 16.

The theme-based, communication enriched camp allowed participating children to have fun while working on improving their target need areas, including speech and language skills, fine motor and sensory processing skills.

“Some children do not receive therapy at their school,” said Occupational Therapist Skylar Sinkey, who worked with children at the camp. “The camp allowed those kids to learn habits they can take back with them to the classroom. For those kids who do receive therapy at school, the camp allowed them to maintain their skills over summer.”

“The camp was intentionally scheduled right before the school year started,” said the camp’s Speech Language Pathologist Amy Stoel. “It was able to serve as a jump-start to the school year.”

The camp atmosphere also allowed children to work on their specific improvement areas in a group setting, a unique aspect from traditional, one-on-one therapy sessions. In addition, parents were given tips for helping their children to follow through and continue their progress at home.
