Yorkshire Eye Clinic & Optical recently invested in optomap® technology to provide ultra-widefield, high-resolution digital images of patients’ retinas as a part of a comprehensive eye exam.

“One of the most important parts of a complete eye examination for patients of any age is determining the health of the retina,” said Optometrist Dr. Taylor Kneip. “Our retinas receive light focused by the lens of our eyes and convert that into neural signals the brain then processes for visual recognition. Optomap helps us better visualize a patient’s retina and detect early signs of serious eye conditions, such as a macular degeneration or glaucoma, before a person experiences any signs or symptoms.”

The optomap is a 200 degree digital image of the retina which is much wider than a traditional 45 degree image. It non-invasively captures an instantaneous, ultra-widefield digital image of the retina, revealing important information for the comprehensive evaluation of systemic and ocular health.

In less than half a second an image is easily captured that enables the eye doctors at Yorkshire Eye Clinic & Optical to discover retinal diseases and serious eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular degeneration, and other pathologies like melanomas. Optomap can also potentially help detect other health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Early detection of any retinal abnormality may lead to earlier and safer treatments and in many cases prevent vision loss. Yorkshire Eye Clinic & Optical’s doctors will have optomap taken annually for patients regardless of symptoms, thereby allowing the doctors to observe subtle changes occurring as patients age.

Yorkshire Eye Clinic & Optical offers a full line of ophthalmology, optometry and optical services, including cataract and oculoplastic surgery; neuro-ophthalmology; treatment for medical eye problems like glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration; dry eye, red eye and eye allergy management; and a complete line of frames, lenses and contacts.
