Brookings Health System’s new CT system uses low dose radiation and artificial intelligence to create high-resolution images with enhanced contrast, texture and detail. Brookings Health System recently installed a new computerized tomography (CT) system that scans patients more quickly and allows the health system to perform additional diagnostic medical imaging tests.

“Our new CT system allows technologists to setup next to the patient. It also streamlines and automates workflow for our team members, meaning we can scan patients faster and get test results more quickly to their medical provider for interpretation. For emergency situations, like trauma or stroke, our increased speed helps patients have better outcomes,” said Imaging Director Nicole Winseman.

The 64-slice GE Revolution Ascend CT machine uses low-dose radiation and artificial intelligence to create high-resolution, digital images on par with a 128-slice system. The system auto-centers the patient for the most accurate imaging and removes glare created by metal inside the body, such as with artificial joints. The high-quality images have enhanced contrast, texture and detail that help physicians diagnose disease, view abnormalities and assess damage from trauma.

“With one of the first 128-slice quality CT systems in the region, we can create detailed images for advanced applications,” said Winseman. “We can now perform coronary calcium scans of the heart to determine if plaque inside the arteries restricts blood flow. This helps medical providers understand a patient’s risk for heart disease.”

In addition, the new CT scanner improves patient access and comfort. Its wider bore opening provides 22% more room than the previous model used by the health system. The longer table allows for scanning taller patients without repositioning them and holds up to 675 pounds to accommodate bariatric patients. With the aid of a ceiling mounted camera, the table also automatically adjusts to the correct position for a patient. The system can remember a patient’s table setting for the next time a scan is needed.

Brookings Health System’s radiology department offers the most comprehensive clinical imaging capabilities in Brookings. Local patients can also receive MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and X-ray procedures close to home, saving them time and money. Images can be shared with any medical provider from any health organization. For more information, please visit brookingshealth.org/Imaging.
