Respiratory Therapist Janie Isham recently became certified as a Clinical Sleep Educator from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.

The Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate Program provides non-physician health care providers working in sleep medicine with training and education to aid in the care and management of patients with sleep disorders, primarily sleep apnea. A certificate as a Clinical Sleep Educator recognizes the importance of health care professionals who collaborate with physicians, patients, and families in the delivery of services and management of sleep disorders.

As a Clinical Sleep Educator, Isham can act as a liaison and point of contact for patient issues, problems, and treatments. She communicates with patients, families, and the community to educate individuals on sleep disorders, good sleep hygiene, ways to optimize treatment, methods to improve and monitor compliance with prescribed treatment, and in general assists patients in eliminating barriers to care in order to maximize their quality of life.

To become a Clinical Sleep Educator, Isham was required to complete an educational seminar and pass a proficiency exam.

In addition to her Clinical Sleep Educator certification, Isham has 32 years of experience as a respiratory therapist; she received her degree from ITS Career Institute Respiratory School in Jacksonville, Fla. She also has seven years of experience as a Registered Polysomnographic Technogist, an individual who studies sleep, and has performed sleep study testing for 12 years.
