Pain Management Services Now Available at Brookings Health’s Outreach Specialty Clinic

Brookings Health System now provides pain management services for area patients the first and third Monday of each month at the Outreach Specialty Clinic located inside Brookings Hospital.
Certified registered nurse anesthetists perform interventional pain management using minimally invasive techniques. The therapy aides the healing process and relieves pain when other non-surgical interventions have failed. Often patients regain mobility and return to work or home responsibilities.
“Chronic pain is one of the most prevalent medical problems in today’s society. According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, it affects over 100 million Americans, more than the number of people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer combined,” said Chief Nursing Officer Tammy Hillestad. “Our anesthesia team’s pain management services offer safe and effective pain relief as an alternative to narcotic drugs.”
Conditions treated through pain management services include:

Lower Back Pain: Steroid injections reduce inflammation that causes lower back pain, including herniated discs, degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis, a narrowing of open spaces within the spine that puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. A patient may have up to three steroid injections a year if needed.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: Sacroiliac injections reduce inflammation where the lower spine and pelvis connect, reducing pain in the buttocks, lower back or legs. The injections may also be used for other therapeutic and diagnostic purposes.

Muscle Pain: Trigger point injections treat painful areas of muscle groups or knots of muscle when muscles do not relax.
A physician referral is required for pain management services. The next clinic date is June 20.
Brookings Health System’s anesthesia department offers personalized pain management for patients, including general anesthesia, sedation, spinal, epidural and labor epidural. In addition, the anesthesia team provides invasive and non-invasive pain relief techniques along with patient-controlled painkillers.
