Anesthesia

We provide a full spectrum of anesthesia services, including general anesthesia (full unconsciousness), regional anesthesia (nerve blocks/epidurals), spinal anesthesia, and IV sedation. Your CRNA will consult with you to determine the safest and most effective option based on your procedure and medical history.

For your safety, we generally require patients to have an empty stomach—typically nothing to eat or drink after midnight before surgery. This prevents a complication called aspiration, where stomach contents could enter the lungs while you are under sedation. Always follow the specific fasting instructions provided by your surgical team.

Our anesthesia team uses modern medications and techniques, such as patient-controlled analgesia and nerve blocks, to minimize discomfort. Well-controlled pain is not just about comfort; it actually speeds up the healing process and reduces post-surgical complications.

At Brookings Health, your anesthesia care is managed by a dedicated team of five Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). A CRNA will be by your side from the start of your procedure through discharge, constantly monitoring your vital signs—including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels—to ensure your safety and comfort.
